FAA’s recommendations for the Night of the Arts 20.8.

Mixing two cultural contexts as diverse as the Finnish and the Chinese one, is certain to result in an abundant variety of events and performances at this year’s Night of the Arts in Helsinki. Located all over Helsinki centre and more remote areas, visitors are guaranteed to be well-entertained and fed by artists, musicians, dancers, cooks, dancers, poets…

To offer you a guideline in this jungle of amusement, atmosphere and experience, FAA picked some of the most promising happenings. We wish you a magical late summer night!

Kutikuti 10th year anniversary, Gallery Huuto
Finnish Comic Art Association Kutikuti celebrates its 10th anniversary with a colourful and exciting exhibition of its members’ latest works at Galleria Huuto (12 am to 9 pm, Uudenmaankatu 35)

World Press Photo exhibition, Sanomatalo
The winners of this year’s World Press Photo competition will be displayed at Sanomatalo (4 pm to 8 pm, Töölönlahdenkatu 2). See the top of current photojournalism!

Panel Discussion – For whom is art made? Mustikkamaan kesäteatteri
Have you ever wondered for whom art is made? Or who pays for it? Helsinki University Theatre asks these and other relevant questions at their panel discussion with artists and politicians. (6.30 pm to 7.30pm, Mustikkamaan kesäteatteri, Mustikkamaankuja 1)

Helsinki routes & sound landscapes, Pohjoisesplanadi
All along the Northern Esplanade you can experience sound art, live painting by Elina Aho and spoken word, accompanied by the traditional Finnish instrument jouhikko, a three-stringed bowed lyre. (4 pm to 6 pm, Pohjoisesplanadi 11-13)

Mimmit peinttaa, Lemunkuja
What happens when you provide some of Finland’s top female spray artists with paint and unleash them on a bare wall in Vallila? Go see for yourself! (6 pm to 12 pm, Lemunkuja)

Hollow sound: Real music for unreal times, Siltavuorenranta 18
It is never too late to get to know new crazy instruments! We are talking about the handpan, to be seen and heard in interplay with different video works. (9 pm to 10 pm, Siltavuorenranta 18)

Gallery walk of the Night of the Arts, Lönnrotinkatu 33
The gallery walk of the Night of the Arts is perfect for getting a covering overview of Helsinki’s current exhibitions of contemporary art. The stops are: Gallery Muu, Project Room, Forum Box, Gallery Pirkko-Liisa Topelius. (6 pm to 8 pm, starting from Lönnrotinkatu 33)

The weird history of Finnish video art from Youtube 2005-2015, Kaarlenkatu 10
Ten years of Finnish video art from Youtube in Kalleria, collected by siblings Jenna and Juha Jauhiainen. The video is accompanied by the exhibition “NOW HERE” by HYPERREAALIYAH and Hanna Hyy (12 am to 10 pm, Kalleria, Kaarlenkatu 10)

Short films at Katajanokka, Kino K-13
At Kino K-13 in Katajanokka you can see the best picks of today’s Finnish short films; with subjects varying from multiculturality to drama, and from comedy to animation. (6 pm to 11 pm, Kanavakatu 12)

Helsinki Night Market, Teurastamo
Have you ever accidentally swallowed a bug? Well, now you get a chance to do it wholeheartedly and on purpose! The Helsinki Night Market committed itself to provide an all-around China-themed experience for its visitors with lots of dragons, sparkling lions, live music and street food. (4 pm to 11 pm, Teurastamo)

Here Out There, Cable Factory
Get a glimpse of Chinese everyday life, family stories and revived myths by visiting this exhibition of video works from female Chinese artists, curated by Maaretta Jaukkuri. (Mon–Sun 11 am to 6 pm, until 30.8.2015)
